#8 Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan

This great book is recommended to kids age 10-12. Charlotte Parkhurst was an orphan. Her parents had died when she was just a baby. She lived in a orphanage. The staff there prevented her from being adopted, and made her work in the kitchen. She preferred to be out in the stables, with Vern, the elderly man who worked there. When her best friend is adopted, and her favorite horse dies, she decides to disguise herself as a boy and run away. Follow Charlotte and her adventure in this extraordinary book. Exciting for both girls and boys.
