#18 Miss Spitfire by Sarah Miller

Recommended to kids ages 11-13. Miss Spitfire is an AMAZING book. Anne Sullivan is hired to teach Helen Keller. The only thing is, Anne hardly knows anything about how to teach Helen. She decides that she is just going to have to wing it. When Anne arrives, she finds out that Helen is very spoiled, and catered to left and right by her parents, which makes it even more difficult to teach her. No matter what Anne is not about to give up.  This book is unlike any other book about Helen Keller that I have ever read. It tells the other side, what it was like teaching the deaf, blind, and spoiled Helen Keller. The whole first week they battled so hard that by the end of the week, Anne was missing a tooth. The way Sarah Miller writes, you feel as if you are Anne, struggling to teach, and Helen struggling to learn. Anne doesn't get half as much credit as she should, because it was her who accompanied Helen through her whole life and taught Helen everything she knew. I read this book just recently, and then I was trying to tell the story to my dad and brother. I finally took the book out and and read a few pages to them. I found out that it was almost as good the second time as the first. Now THAT is a sure sign of a winner!
